How Laptops are Unlike Desktop Computers

Power Supply

Like desktops, laptops can be plugged into the wall to receive AC power through an AC adapter. However, for laptops to be truly portable, battery power is needed. Most laptops use some type of rechargeable battery, such as lithium, nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride. Many laptop computer models are also equipped with power management software to extend battery life

Display Screen

Laptop screen sizes range from 12 to 15 inches. Modern laptop display screens are LCD screens with minimum 800 x 600 pixel resolution.

Input Devices

Instead of using a keyboard or a mouse like a desktop computer, a laptop uses an inbuilt trackball, trackpoint or touch pad to move the cursor on the LCD screen. All of these devices have buttons that act like the right and left buttons of a mouse. Most laptops also provide a port that allows the user to hook up a mouse to the laptop.

Docking connections

Connecting the laptop to a docking station allows for a more convenient desktop use. The station includes several peripheral devices, such as a full-size computer monitor, full-size keyboard, mouse, disk drives and a printer. Most laptops nowadays come equipped with a docking connection.
